The Uganda Primary Schools Sports Associations (UPSSA) National Ball Games kicked off on Wednesday afternoon in Mubende Municipality, with several matches played in netball and football.

The competition had a delayed start due to the lengthy mandatory screening of team players. Teams began arriving at the host venue, Mubende Army SS, as early as Sunday evening, but the physical and document verification exercise continued until Wednesday.

After the matches were sanctioned to begin, Bushenyi registered a double victory on the opening day in the U14 boys' football category, beating Arua 1-0 before defeating rivals Sheema Municipality 2-0.

The two victories put Bushenyi at the top of Group D with maximum points from their opening two matches.

Mbarara District also made a strong start, securing a 4-1 victory over Abim.
However, three teams from the Ankole region — Bushenyi, Sheema and Mbarara District — have been drawn in the same Group D, alongside Rukungiri District, setting up a highly competitive group.

"We have started on a high, and we hope to maintain the form. Last year, we stopped in the quarter-finals, but this time we hope to improve our performance. The challenge, however, is that we have three teams from the same locality in the same Group D," said Bushenyi Sports Officer Abel Kamugisha.

Several netball matches were also played in both the boys' and girls' categories.
According to the organisers, the seven-day championship will climax on Tuesday.
