Universal Secondary School (USE) sides Butare SS from Buhweju and Kitagata SS from Sheema may not win the USSSA Ankole Zone boys’ football trophy, but they will not return to their schools crestfallen.
The two teams will be remembered in the history of this championship, currently ongoing in Ibanda, for posting some of the most shocking results in their pools, having defeated title hopefuls and former champions.

Butare SS from Buhweju, who had previously been punching bags in this competition and had never recorded a win, stunned 2019 winners Buremba SS with a 2-1 victory.
On a soaked and slippery Ibanda PTC pitch following a heavy downpour, Julius Nuwarimpa and Isaac Atwine scored the goals that sent Group J wide open, leaving all teams with a chance to qualify for the round of 32.

Meanwhile, Clinton Kaijuka made the difference with a rare 5th-minute goal for Kitagata SS, as they held on to defeat 2024 champions Welden School Mbarara. The result not only stands as a major upset but also places Kitagata among the giant killers of the tournament.

As of Friday, the four teams were set to play decisive matches to determine qualification for the next round. Buremba, with one point from two matches, will face Welden School, who have three points and need only a draw to progress. Butare, with three points, will take on Kitagata, who lead with four points, in the other crucial fixture.

The tournament, which started on Wednesday, will climax on Sunday with the finals and an awards ceremony. The top four teams will qualify to represent Ankole at the national boys’ football championship in Lira next month.
