Youth leaders in the Greater Bushenyi sub-region are eager to welcome President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who is set to visit the region this week as part of the Parish Development Model (PDM) tour.
The Parish Development Model (PDM) is a government initiative aimed at promoting economic development and improving livelihoods at the parish level.
During a press briefing held at Tuzza Hotel in Bushenyi town on February 23, 2025, in preparation for the president's visit, the youth in Greater Bushenyi expressed their enthusiasm and expectations.
"We are thrilled to host the president in our region. We believe that the PDM has the potential to bring about real change and improve people's lives," said Baryamujura Ibra, one of the youth leaders.
Baryamujura noted that they have actively engaged in PDM program activities, including training sessions aimed at building their skills and knowledge in agriculture, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy.
The president's visit to the Ankole sub-region, which is set to start on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, will feature a series of activities, including meetings with local leaders, interactions with PDM beneficiaries in Ibanda and Rubirizi districts, the opening of a skilling hub in Kashari, Mbarara district, and a public rally in Mwizi sub-county, Rwampara district. Youth leaders are expected to actively participate in these activities and showcase their skills and achievements.
Unfulfilled promises
At the top of their agenda are long-awaited road development projects, particularly the Kabwohe-Masheruka-Nyakambu-Bwizibwera-Nsiika (49Km) road and the rehabilitation of the Mbarara-Ishaka road, which they say are crucial for the region’s economic growth by facilitating easier transportation of goods and people. The youth are also advocating for increased investment in healthcare and education. They are urging the president to upgrade Kitagata Hospital to a regional referral hospital and increase its funding, which would provide better medical services to the community. Additionally, they are requesting the establishment of a skilling hub to equip them with practical skills for the job market.
Furthermore, they are calling for the tarmacking of the Kabwohe-Kitagata-Kabira-Rukungiri road, which would not only improve transportation but also boost trade between neighboring districts.
Meanwhile, Kasigazi William Donanto, the Bushenyi District Deputy Resident Commissioner, emphasized the importance of mass participation to support the president’s efforts to bring positive change to the region.
"I encourage everyone to be part of this historic event to showcase your community and demonstrate enthusiasm for the Parish Development Model (PDM) initiative," Kasigazi said.
