Rubirizi
ACODEV-Uganda, in partnership with Rubirizi District Local Government, has launched a new initiative featuring “Couple Dialogues” aimed at fostering shared responsibility in family planning and strengthening family unity. The inaugural dialogue was held today in Ntunga A and B villages, Kikumbo Parish, Katerera Sub-county.
The program directly addresses the challenge of low male involvement in reproductive health and decisions about family size. Cindy Okullo, ACODEV Uganda’s Program Manager, said the effort targets men and women aged 15–49. “The core goal is to bring couples together to collectively access family planning services, make joint decisions on family size, and ultimately build stronger families,” Okullo explained. “We aim to shift the community mindset regarding responsibility for family planning.”

Hon. Kambendiho Godfrey, the Rubirizi District Vice Chairperson, expressed gratitude for the initiative, noting the difficulty many families face in cooperating. “This training will help couples work together to plan their futures and improve decision-making processes,” he said.
Residents Kyarimpa Specioza and Rutagarukanyima Didas from Ntunga Village highlighted the expected benefits, noting that the dialogues will improve communication and unity within households, enable joint planning for children’s education and family projects, and significantly reduce conflicts and misunderstandings often caused when one spouse neglects family planning responsibilities.
By increasing joint decision-making, the project aims to boost demand for family planning services while reducing incidents of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) linked to reproductive health conflicts.
