MBALE - Police in Mbale City have arrested three individuals linked to a violent attack allegedly carried out by a group of Imbalu boys on Saturday, November 16, 2024.
The suspects, identified as Wamimbi Bosco, Watuwa Bernard, and Wabulo Moses, were apprehended following an incident in Katwaka Cell, Bumagenyi Ward, Industrial Division, where the group armed with pangas, sticks, and stones attacked several individuals.
According to police, the assailants injured a man identified as Wesonga Swaib, striking him on the head with a panga, and robbed other victims of mobile phones and other belongings, which authorities are working to identify. Wesonga was rushed to Bunampongo Health Centre III by his relatives for first aid and is currently recovering.
Cultural practice under scrutiny
The Imbalu ritual, a traditional circumcision practice observed among the Bagisu, has historically been a peaceful cultural event. However, security agencies have expressed concern over the increasing incidents of violence associated with some participants.
“These actions undermine a cultural practice that has been peacefully observed for many years,” said ACP Kituuma Rusoke, spokesperson for the Uganda Police Force.
Police have assured the public of heightened security measures to prevent further violence and to protect both participants and the general public during the Imbalu season.
Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have urged victims or anyone with information to come forward.
Background:
Imbalu, a rite of passage for young men among the Bagisu, is typically characterized by celebratory cultural festivities. However, recent incidents of violence and criminal behavior by rogue individuals are raising concerns about the sanctity of this revered tradition.
Call for community cooperation
The police have called upon community leaders and cultural custodians to engage in efforts to uphold the integrity of the tradition and discourage violence.
“We will not tolerate actions that jeopardize the safety of citizens under the guise of cultural practices,” Rusoke emphasized.
Further updates on the case and the condition of the injured victim are expected as investigations proceed.
