BUSHENYI – The Ministry of Health has officially handed over a modernised and fully equipped ambulance to Bushenyi District leadership to enhance emergency medical response services.
The ambulance, registered as UG 3748 M, has a long history of service in the region. It previously belonged to Kyabugimbi Health Centre IV and was later transferred to Bushenyi Health Centre after Kyabugimbi received a new unit.
The Ministry has since refurbished the vehicle, upgrading it to meet modern standards and equipping it with essential medical equipment to serve as a reliable lifeline for patients in the district.

Massive Mosquito Net Consignment Received
In a parallel effort to combat the high prevalence of malaria, the Government of Uganda has supplied Bushenyi District with 168,200 insecticide-treated mosquito nets.
The consignment was officially received by district leaders led by the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Emmy Ngabirano.
The handover ceremony was attended by key stakeholders, including the Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (DCAO), the District Health Officer (DHO), and Apollo Kakonge Lee, Executive Director of the Western Ankole Civil Society Forum (WACSOF).

Distribution Strategy
The mosquito nets will be distributed across all 72 parishes in the district, including wards within Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality. According to the District Health Officer, the exercise is expected to begin in early May.
Before the distribution, the district health team will conduct a comprehensive sensitisation campaign to educate residents on the proper use and maintenance of the nets, ensuring they effectively prevent malaria-related illnesses and deaths.

National Fight Against Malaria
The distribution comes at a critical time. According to the 2024 World Malaria Report, Uganda ranks third globally in malaria cases and ninth in deaths. In 2025 alone, the country recorded 11.7 million cases and 2,342 deaths, more than half of which were children under five.

Dr. Richard Kabanda, Commissioner at the Ministry of Health, said the 2025/2026 Malaria Elimination Strategy is intensifying interventions to achieve universal access.

“We continue to face challenges, including inconsistent use of preventive measures, climate variability, and emerging resistance that undermines existing control tools,” Dr. Kabanda noted.
“We are intensifying interventions at all levels, from national to community level, to ensure universal access to malaria services.”

Health experts note that consistent use of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets can reduce malaria transmission by up to 50 percent.
The campaign is jointly funded by the Government of Uganda, the Global Fund, and the Government of the United States, in line with the goals set out in Uganda Vision 2040.
