Mitooma — The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission has directed the Mitooma District NRM Elections Office to organize elections on May 30, 2025, to fill four remaining positions within the party’s mainstream structure.
The positions to be filled include Vice Chairperson, General Secretary, Secretary for Publicity, and Finance Secretary. The previous attempt to conduct these elections was aborted due to violent disruptions.
This directive follows the recently concluded election in which Moses Tumwekwatse was declared the new district chairperson with 349 votes, defeating the incumbent Wilberforce Byaboneka, who garnered 297 votes. Byaboneka reportedly rejected the outcome, leading to chaos that prompted the NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, to suspend the entire electoral process.
“We could not proceed with the elections amid violence and insecurity. It was important to restore order first,” said Dr. Tanga Odoi.
In a letter dated May 27, 2025, and addressed to Mitooma District Registrar Ephraim Kyabakama, Dr. Odoi instructed that the elections be held at the constituency level on Friday, May 30.
According to the letter, delegates will convene at their respective constituencies—Ruhinda South, Ruhinda North, and Ruhinda County—to elect the remaining officials.
Speaking to Torch Media Africa by phone, Registrar Kyabakama confirmed receipt of the directive and expressed the office’s readiness to conduct the elections.
“We are fully prepared to conduct the elections as directed by the Commission,” Kyabakama said. “We have also coordinated with security agencies to ensure a peaceful and safe voting process for all candidates and delegates.”
He further noted that despite threats from some individuals, the District Office remains committed to delivering a transparent and secure electoral exercise.
