Balaam panics as Ex-Minister Apuuli bounces back

The return of former Bunyoro affairs minister, Ernest Kiiza Apuuli, into the race for the Masindi Municipality MP seat ahead of the 2026 general elections has caused a stir. Apuuli announced his candidacy this week, stating that after five years on the sidelines, he is ready to re-enter the political arena. His top priority is restoring peace among the political leadership in Masindi.

"Conflicts have greatly affected service delivery in the district, including a non-functioning service commission for a year. I aim to bring unity and ensure proper utilization of funds," Apuuli said. He plans to run on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket and focus on skilling the youth, creating a bursary scheme, and improving local infrastructure and healthcare.

Apuuli served two terms as Bunyoro affairs minister but lost the 2021 election to Joab Businge of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) by 164 votes. Voters cited his conflicts with local leadership as a reason for his defeat. Although State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, Balaam Barugahara, has not officially announced his candidacy, his teams are mobilizing support, and campaign posters have appeared throughout the municipality. Apuuli's return could challenge Balaam's political ambitions, especially for the NRM flag.
Other candidates include the incumbent Joab Businge (FDC), Rogers Byamukama of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), and Innocent Turyahikayo (Democratic Party).

Balaam declined to comment, stating he would announce his plans in due time
