Entebbe In a major operation over the festive season, the State House Anti-Corruption Unit (SH-ACU), in collaboration with Entebbe police, Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) security, and local leaders, uncovered a cache of counterfeit currency worth $2 million. The seizure occurred at a motor vehicle garage in Entebbe Municipality following months of surveillance.
The search revealed 40 metallic boxes containing fake U.S. dollars
The discovery stemmed from a tip-off received by SH-ACU in May 2024 regarding a suspicious consignment held at Entebbe International Airport. After months of coordinated monitoring with other security agencies, the consignment was smuggled out of the airport on December 17, 2024. SH-ACU investigators traced it to the garage, where the search revealed 40 metallic boxes containing fake U.S. dollars.
In a bid to deceive their targets, the fraudsters had filled the boxes with soil to increase their weight. The operation also uncovered other boxes falsely packaged to appear as legitimate transit goods, but containing useless items such as empty soda and beer crates.
Three suspects have been arrested, and efforts to track down additional accomplices are underway. Brigadier General Henry Isoke, Head of SH-ACU, reaffirmed the unit's commitment to cracking down on fraud and protecting both Ugandan citizens and foreign nationals from criminal schemes.
“This operation underscores our unwavering determination to expose and dismantle networks that prey on the unsuspecting through fake and fraudulent transactions,” Brig. Gen. Isoke stated.
Investigations into the case are ongoing, and SH-ACU has called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
