Earth Day 2025: Our power, our planet – A call to action for women and girls in climate justice

As we commemorate World Earth Day 2025, I am reminded of the profound interconnection between our planet's health and the empowerment of women and girls. This year's theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” serves as a crucial reminder that the fight for climate justice is not only an environmental concern but also a social one. As a climate justice advocate and the founder of the Creation Care Foundation, I firmly believe that caring for our Earth is our moral calling, and we cannot achieve sustainable livelihoods for our communities unless we actively empower women and girls.

Historically, women and girls have borne the brunt of environmental degradation and climate change. In many parts of the world, they are the primary caregivers and managers of natural resources, yet they are often excluded from decision-making processes. This exclusion perpetuates cycles of poverty and vulnerability, undermining their capacity to contribute to climate solutions. However, when we empower women and support girls’ education, we unlock a powerful force for environmental stewardship and sustainable development.

Empowering women and girls leads to holistic benefits for our planet. Research indicates that women are more likely than men to invest in their families and communities. When women are given access to education, resources, and decision-making power, they become catalysts for change. From innovating sustainable farming practices to driving local environmental movements, women’s leadership is essential for crafting effective climate strategies that resonate with impacted communities.

At Creation Care Foundation, we focus on initiatives that bridge gender equality and environmental resilience. Our programs aim to equip women and girls with the skills and resources they need to be leaders in climate action. This includes providing training in sustainable agricultural practices, promoting access to renewable energy, and fostering networks that amplify their voices in environmental governance.our "Trash to Treasure" initiative is a testament to the power of empowering women and girls. By providing them with skills and economic opportunities, we're not only improving their livelihoods but also promoting sustainable practices and reducing waste.

As climate change continues to threaten our planet, the urgency for inclusive action has never been greater. We must recognize that the climate crisis is not gender-neutral; its impacts are disproportionately felt by women and marginalized groups. Therefore, it is imperative that we not only advocate for environmental protection but also strive for gender equity in all climate initiatives.

On this Earth Day, I urge policymakers, community leaders, and individuals alike to join us in our mission to care for the Earth and empower women and girls. Let's work together to drive transformative change and ensure a livable future for all. Our power, our planet. Let's harness it for a better tomorrow.
